Online social distancing game racks up 10,000 plays in its first two days An online game aimed at helping children understand the importance of social distancing amid the novel coronavirus outbreak has racked up over 10,000 plays during the first two days after the launch. The online game, ‘Can You Save the World?’, helps players of all ages become better at social distancing in the real world. The players have to stay away from people in busy streets, collect masks and avoid sneezes while the final score shows how many lives have been saved. It is a vertically scrolling video game, co-developed by a UK-based professor of psychology, where players are tasked with walking through a virtual city while social distancing. https://arynews.tv/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1024x576_MP4_8411688661809675351.mp4 Co-designer Professor Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire said he was inspired by the tricky task of keeping his distance while outside, Mail Online reported ‘...

Coronavirus: why does it kill some people but give others not even a mild headache? LONDON: British researchers will study the genes of thousands of ill COVID-19 patients to try to crack one of the most puzzling riddles of the novel coronavirus: why does it kill some people but give others not even a mild headache? Researchers from across the United Kingdom will sequence the genetic code of people who fell critically ill with COVID-19 and compare their genomes with those who were mildly ill or not ill at all. The hunt for the specific genes that could cause a predisposition to getting ill with COVID-19 will involve up to 20,000 people currently or previously in hospital intensive care with COVID-19 and about 15,000 people with mild symptoms. Scientists caution that their knowledge of the novel coronavirus, which emerged in China last year, is still modest though they say it is striking how it can be so deadly for some but so mild for others. It is, as yet, unclear why. “We think that t...

Chinese coronavirus vaccine could be tested, manufactured in Canada TORONTO: China’s CanSino Biologics, the company behind one of the few coronavirus vaccine candidates already in clinical trials, is collaborating with Canada’s National Research Council to “pave the way” for future trials in Canada, the research council said on Tuesday. The NRC said it would scale up a production process for CanSino’s vaccine candidate at a government facility in Montreal, and that CanSino was preparing a clinical trial application for Health Canada, the country’s drug regulator. The CanSino vaccine is in early trials, and there is no way to know whether it will work. But if it does, the collaboration could help ensure that Canadians have access to it. Local trial data could reassure Health Canada that the vaccine is safe, and local manufacturing could ensure some doses are at hand. A vaccine that protects people from the coronavirus could eventually end the pandemic, but finding one that works and man...

Twitter to label ‘misleading’ virus content Twitter said Monday it began tagging “misleading” and “disputed” claims about the coronavirus pandemic in a stepped-up effort to label potentially harmful content. The move by Twitter comes with social networks struggling to deal with a wave of misinformation and unverified claims about the disease outbreak. “Serving the public conversation remains our overarching mission, and we’ll keep working to build tools and offer context so that people can find credible and authentic information on Twitter,” said a blog post by Twitter’s site integrity chief Yoel Roth and public policy director Nick Pickles. The initiative comes following previous actions by Twitter to remove content posing a specific threat to health or safety. Twitter said under the new effort, “warning labels” would be added for misleading statements or assertions that have been confirmed to be false or inaccurate by public health authorities, as well as other claims about which...

WhatsApp looks like it’s chasing after Zoom with its web app moving to support video calls with up to 50 people, effectively offering an alternative to Zoom, Google Meet, and Skype. The new option was spotted in a beta version of WhatsApp Web by eagle-eyed researchers at WABetaInfo. Shortcuts in the WhatsApp’s menus will direct you to the newly released Facebook Messenger Rooms, where you can create a room and invite people to join, or create a room directly from WhatsApp. WhatsApp recently gained a major update with support for eight-way video calls on mobile devices, but these new shortcuts will give you another option if you need to invite more people to the conversation. The feature will also be available on iOS and Android, but it’s the desktop support that makes it a viable replacement for established video conferencing tools. Join the conversation When Messenger Rooms launched in April, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated that it would be supported across WhatsApp, Insta...
